I’m Zach, a 37-year-old tattoo artist from Baltimore. My tattooing journey began with a childhood passion for tracing comic books and experimenting with graffiti art. However, tattoos have been integral to my life. From my grandfather, who proudly bore ink from the legendary Cap Coleman shop in Norfolk, Virginia, to local artists who inked incredible stories, I’ve had several strong inspirations. When I was 15 years old, my sister decided to get her first tattoo, which introduced me to the world of tattoo artistry. She started dating the tattoo artist, who soon became my brother-in-law. At 16, while most of my friends were hitting the road for sports and socializing, I found myself spending countless hours in the tattoo shop. I was the one meticulously cleaning tubes, tidying up the studio, and absorbing knowledge about the craft. By 17, I had completed my first tattoo at a previous tattoo studio I worked for.
I dedicated a decade to this shop, eventually joining forces with a colleague to establish our own space. I built a talented team, and the venture grew to include a third location. I had to work through my fair share of business-related legal hurdles and understand regulations to reach this step.
However, the challenges of managing multiple shops began to take a toll on me, leading to the dissolution of my partnership. I retained my latest studio in Arbutus, Maryland, a cozy private setting perfectly suited for me, my apprentice, and our loyal small-town clients.
My mission in this new chapter is to share my knowledge with aspiring young artists. The tattoo industry often hides its secrets, making it challenging to break into. My goal is to break down these barriers and provide opportunities to emerging artists who may not have had formal apprenticeships, were self-taught, or simply lacked a guiding mentor.
